Agency owners, small and large, often wonder… should they hire full-time employees, part-time, or freelance contractors? Or maybe it’s best to work with a white label provider? Let’s discuss what your best options are and how it will fit into your agency’s strengths.
If you are struggling with the same question, ask yourself first what kind of help do you really need. If you have the workload to hire someone full-time and you have the cash flow coming, or you have investable assets, then you should absolutely consider hiring full-time employees!
However, agencies that are just starting up don’t necessarily have this opportunity. They usually have more time than cash. The challenge they face is that they get caught up in ‘building a business’ or their appetite for success is bigger than their plate. In this case, I would recommend working with someone on a contract basis.
You don’t have to have a single employee to have a successful business. What’s important as you get started is actually executing client campaigns. On the other hand, don’t be afraid to bring on another teammate if you will. If you’re crushing it, but your sleep or schedule is paying for the time allotted, consider bringing on a specialist or a VA to help you handle the workload.
To help you understand the pro’s and con’s of each and if you’re ready or not to hire we’ve laid out some additional things to consider below.
Your not ready to hire
If you’re still gathering information on your niche, target market, or service offerings, worrying about hiring an employee is something you shouldn’t even blink twice about. You’re establishing the foundation of your agency. Your focus now should be how you are going to stand out from the competition.
However, there is one caveat to consider here. An initial unique value proposition agency owners can use to set themselves apart is the processes and efficiently in which they deliver services. In this regard, you should start to lay out your overarching business strategy. Will you hire employees that can communicate in an extra friendly and clear way to make clients happy? Will you outsource your work to a professional agency that’s known to get clients really good results. Focus on getting your first client first and foremost but always keep your next growth move intact.
You’re ready to hire
It may come as a surprise to you but sometimes agency owners need a little guidance from others to help them with time management. Because the industry brings in so many ambitious entrepreneurs. we can get caught up in an extreme workload, leading many of us to 40, 50, 60+ hour work weeks until we completely burn out.
A better strategy would be to get clear about your work-life balance goals. If you are okay with working more than 40 hours a week to dedicate yourself to building your agency’s empire then by all means keep at it. If your dream is to work 20 hours a week, establish a plan to ensure you’re not missing out on the other things life has to offer.
Once you’ve determined what you want you can set a strict schedule and boundaries with both employees and clients. Hire employees with clear intent of what they will do so you don’t have to. Just keep in mind when you hire new employees or ones that do not have experience you may have to take extra time to train them or watch over their work initially.
