Today’s Marketing Hack of the Day: How to use proper page length to increase your traffic.

[This is a transcription from the Clickx Marketing Hack of the Day video series.]

This is relevant if you’re really doing SEO to your website and if you’re trying to rank organically for a particular topic.

Content Length Really Does Matter In The Long-Run

One of the things that you really want to focus on is the length of your content or the length of the page. Take a look at everybody that’s ranking for a specific keyword and see how many words that they have on that page. Take a look at every single person that’s ranking for the particular topic and check out their word count on that blog. It may be 1,000 words, some of them may even have 2,500 words or even up to 5,000 words.

Now, obviously if you’re trying to do the same thing with your page you want to find out you what they all have in common versus how your keyword count on your website. Focusing on the length is going to help you in the long-run. You need to expand the content in order to be able to write more maybe you have to take a step back and introduce your topic and expand on the the points that you’re trying to make and elaborate on what you know, the way you think and how you can help. Show your opinions on a certain topic and even include other people’s thoughts or articles and add links that will help you make a better statement.

Find A Topic & Write More Than Your Competition

What I usually tell people is go and Google search the term that you’re trying to rank and write more than everyone else that has written about it. Take a look at every single site that’s on the first page on Google, if they have 2,000 words go write 5,000. Why? Because you want to make sure that if you’re going to try to promote this content and you’re going to outreach and tell other people about it they’re not going to link to a 300-word article.

Back in the day you could rank on the first page for a 300-word article maybe 500 words and you’re already doing a great job but today that’s not the case. In fact, Brian Dean did a study where they analyzed about a million pages and almost every single page that was on the first page was eighteen hundred plus words and it’s not just for those few sites. I think it goes across the board depending on the competition of the topic depending on how many other people are writing about the same topic and depending on the frequency of the content.

Revamp Your Content Too

You even want to make sure the recency of the content is always up to date. Go back to your older blog post and add more content because you still want to stay relevant so go update them because when you update them Google still sees them as a new changes. Google might rank them higher and it will put it on the top of the list so at the end of the day you really want to make sure that every single page that you have out there is the best in class in terms of page length and in terms of the meat of the subject. Also, in terms of links that you are generating to that page. You can’t really do that with a short 300 word article anymore therefore, if you really want to rank up you really want to compete in certain spaces or certain niches you have to really take a step back and benchmark who is out there. See who is really killing it and figure out how to up your game to beat those guys that are on the first page.

As always if you have any questions leave it in the comment section and I will be more than glad to address them in future videos. Thanks.
